Upstaged Manchester is an entertainment site dedicated to the thriving, eclectic and innovative theatre scene in the North West of England.
The site is run by entertainment journalist, theatre critic and general arts lover, Kristy Stott.
Kristy has been an avid follower of the Manchester theatre scene for as long as she can remember and has written for What’s on Stage, The Library Theatre Company and Cornerhouse Manchester, Creative Tourist and Loads To Do.
Following the decision from the head honchos at What’s on Stage to focus their attention on the theatre scene in the English capital and only feature productions of national interest – UPSTAGED MANCHESTER WAS BORN.
This site is dedicated to covering all of Manchester’s cultural goodness. With a strong focus on theatre, we are keen to cover the Mancunian arts scene right across the board – so if you think that you have or are producing something of cultural value and you want to sing and dance about it – please contact Kristy directly at kristy@upstagedmanchester.com
Dear Kristy
Hope you are well
I’d like to send you the press release for my new solo stand up comedy show, which will be on at the Whitefield Garrick on 5th and 6th July, as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe. I would love a mention and/or review! ‘It’s No Job For A Nice Jewish Girl” is previewing in London and Manchester before heading up to the Edinburgh Fringe in August.
Let me know if you would like a pair of tickets for either performance or if you have any questions about the show.
Regards
Rachel
Dear Upstaged team,
I am writing today to invite you to Obscura Theatre’s new theatre production that is the first play created by Antwerp Mansion in Manchester new arts initiative being performed at the end of October. Fell is a piece of folk horror storytelling set in the landscapes of Cumbria which follows an investigation into the case of a missing child. The show delves into a suspenseful, spine-tingling, and mystifying world filled with spirits and plenty of scares. We feel that Fell is the perfect addition to Manchester’s theatrical landscape and comes at a perfect time as the nights draw in and we approach Halloween. We will perform the show at Antwerp Mansion as part of their brand new arts initiative which will create a unique atmosphere that will add to the mystery and uncanny nature of the show.
We are a new theatre company whose aim is to create a cinematic spectacle on a limited budget. We want to explore the genres which theatre is naturally resistant to such as horror and fantasy and create engaging pieces of work for an audience who would not usually attend the theatre. We aim to target students and encourage them to consider further education and careers in theatre and the arts. We would love it if you could help us publicise this production or if you had space in your schedule to come and review it as we feel that, especially in the build-up to Halloween, it would be of interest to your readers.
I have attached our press release in the body of the text below as well as in a dropbox link featuring our promotional posters and an idea of the sound design featured in the production. If you would like us to reserve you some complimentary tickets, let us know.

FELL
It’s beautiful. It’s terrifying. It’s alive!
Antwerp Mansion, Rusholme, M14 5AG. 22nd, 23rd and 25th of October.
Something sinister lurks in the peaks and cairns of the Lake District. Amongst the rocks and discarded bones scattered across the hills is an ancient power, knowledge of which is heard in only whispers in busy taverns. A missing child. A dedicated police officer. Fell is the story of police officer Jane Shipley’s visit to the Lake District to investigate the case of a missing girl. When she arrives at the house of Jacob Beckett, things don’t quite add up and she begins to question her own sanity as she is thrust into a strange world where she must confront her tragic past to unravel a mystery. Fell utilises an energetic mix of puppetry, sound design and a multitude of performance styles to unfurl this vicious tale.
Fell is the first theatrical production created by Antwerp Mansion’s and is made as a collaboration with Obscura Theatre. Obscura have created their own brand of storytelling influenced by a cinematic approach a wicked concoction of narrative, sound design and together create unforgettable immersive experiences. Fell is a new piece of storytelling by writer Patch Middleton that embraces the traditions of folk horror and British fantasy. Director Alex Hurst hopes to bring to the stage an experience that this work and creates both scares and enchants an audience.
Obscura’s mission is to create new and exciting theatre for audiences who don’t usually go to the theatre. Through delving into more cinematic genres we hope to attract new audiences to the theatre and encourage younger people to be more involved in one of the most creative art forms. Performing at Antwerp Mansion gives us the perfect opportunity to access a student audience more used to visiting the venue at a club night and help inspire in them an interest in theatre. After this initial run, we will perform and workshop the production in schools and communities in the North and encourage students to pursue a career in theatre-making and the arts.
